Gita Govinda – Wikipedia

Gita Govinda is a collection of Sanskrit gewt composed in the twelfth century by a Bengali poet born in Orissa—Jayadeva. It contains twelve chapters divided into twenty-four Prabandhas. Prabhandhas, in turn, contain Astapadis or groups of eight couplets.

Gita Govinda is a lively poetic celebration of Ras Lila or the romantic escapades of Lord Krishna as a gopala or cowherd in the peak of his youth. It begins with the flirtations of Lord Krishna with gopis or milkmaids of Vrindavan which is jaixev of the Braj area of Uttar Pradesh and goes on to focus on his love-play with his beloved gopi Radha.

Please also refer my article published in Kala aur Purasartha by Allahabad Museum. National Museum also has wonderful collection of Gita-Govinda painted in different style, medium and school.

Among them is Palm leave painting in Oriya style is unique and very very special. I am sure it will be a feast of eye and heart. Earlier it was displayed in the Manuscript Gallery.

Gita Govinda of Jayadeva. For here, it is all devotion. None of the illustrations that accompany so many illustrated manuscripts of the text- sensuous and lush and charged with eroticism-appear here. Radha is nowhere in sight, and not even the slightest hint of eroticism appears. At the very top of the Shikhara-spire formed by this arrangement, sculpted lions appear and peacocks crane their necks, their forms filled minutely written fragments of the Sanskrit text, but reminding one of what one sees on great temple structures.

It is all very carefully thought out. The Gita Govinda is seen and presented as a devotional text, and not more.

There are other subtitles woven into the arrangement. Please do visit National Museum and enjoy other objects too.
