Karen Wynn Fonstad and the Art of Fantasy Cartography

There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later. I was never a big fan of Forgotten Realms. Read a few of the qtlas and of course, played some of the big video games at the time. But I am a big fan of Karen Wynn Fonstad. I have read many of her Atlas works, and never cease to amaze me her level of detail.

This book is now a rarity, really hard to find, ahlas yes, it is outdated, with very little information on many current happenings in the realm. But it is a great piece of collection. It has very nice information on the most relevant places and regions of the realms, it takes us through the fantastic journeys of old from the character we know and love.

This is NOT an atlas. If you want more details of the existing maps faerin, inns, etc there are some. But better to use your own imagination and come up with your own; and isn’t that a big part of why we game? Karen Wynn Fonstad’s work on the various atlases she has produced is phenomenal, and the Forgotten Realms Farrun is no slouch in this department.

The Forgotten Realms Atlas – Wikipedia

Similar to her other works, it focuses on the novels written for the series. Included in this Atlas is the journey made by Alias in the Curse of the Azure Bonds, the events of the Icewind Dale Trilogy, Spellfire, and the Pool of Radiance complete with maps of the various locations that the respective heroes of those tales battle through. As fascinating as that is, for a Dungeons and Dragons gamer Advanced or otherwisethis Atlas is a little less useful.

The wealth of area knowledge for Shadowdale, Icewind Dale, and Zhentil Keep are impressive, but the lack of a region by region treatment of the Realms was disappointing, especially so because the first portion of the book is mostly maps of the various places in the Realms, with only sparse descriptions of the places featured in them.

As a gamer, I’ve reviewed this with an eye towards its usefulness in that arena – and although the Atlas is primary for fans of the Forgotten Realms novel lines, gamers will find it useful to have maps of various cities, detailed maps of important adventuring locations like Shadowdale, and for those of us who adventure in the Realms before the destruction of Zhentil Keep – a detailed look at that formidable fortress is included within the Atlas’ pages.

All in all, it’s a quality product, and you won’t be unhappy with it. I fell in love with this book the moment I opened it. Detailed maps of many of the Forgotten Realms areas grace the pages, which is very handy whenst running a campaign. Fans of FR novels will find many references to events that take place around the Time of Troubles, although I could see that being a distraction if one does not read those.

Detailed maps with colorful illustrations Cons: Too much focus on FR novel events.

If you like maps with your world, this is it. This book is great wealth of information and has already started new adventures ,highly recommend to anyone who loves forgotten realms. Very nice addition for my campaign – a must! See all 11 reviews. What other items do customers buy after viewing this item? Pages with related products.
