Please try again later. This book will teach you how to fish. The primary use for me has been to establish a framework constructibiliry detailing future projects – giving me the “why” and “how” of a WIDE variety of detailing patterns rather than the constructiiblity. It provides a set of principles in support of detailing projects for protection from water, graceful aging, using the minimum number of parts, etc. It goes so far beyond providing cut-and-pasteable solutions.
The “patterns” developed in the book are rich and diverse. Although some patterns are essential for nearly all details of a certain type i. They encourage the architect to create a “hierarchy of values” for their details and apply the patterns that are most relevant to each detail according to that hierarchy.
By teaching fujction how and why to fish rather than providing a list of currently popular fish, this book is certain to have a long and useful life. I have no doubts that this will be the definitive architectural detailing text of its kind for both students and new and old professionals for many, many years to come. I was hoping that this book would assist staff in developing details for CDs.
Unfortunately, it contains little useful information in that regard. This book is essentially a primer, notes from an “Architectural Detailing ” course — heavy on discussion, light on actual details. I’ve been working in the architectural industry under the direction of the project architect for just about three years now. I remember my first couple of years being terrified of details, particularly those of consultants.
The information in them was far too abstract for me to truly archietctural, and me creating my own aexthetics was too daunting of a task. I’m at a point now where I can much better understand and appreciate details, and I’ve finally begun coordinating and drawing my own from the various disciplines. There’s certainly still room for improvement, and I’ve found this book to be a tremendous resource for me.
Since many design professionals do not have actual construction experience myself includedit is difficult to imagine some of the nuances of the various building components and how they actually come together in the field.
This book makes you think about the realities of construction and articulates some simple yet often overlooked principles in construction.
Effective details result in faster and cheaper assemblies, both in material and labor. Your clients will appreciate the lower budget and shortened schedule. Construction professionals will respect you for understanding and appreciating the realities of construction.
It has always been my goal to not design from the ivory tower, and this book has served me well in in paving the path to my becoming a well-rounded architect. I would strongly recommend this book to any soon-to-be design professional who is serious about learning the nuts-and-bolts of building components and how to detail them. This is a must-have for anyone who undertakes an indepth home renovation or wants to have a better understanding of how homes are built, construction materials and resources, planning, how utilities are run, and how to understand and communicate with your contractor.
I wish I had spent the additional money for a hard-bound version. Simple illustrations of clearly articulated concepts. Provides various ways to improve and think about improving building performance. Outlines detailing patterns for easy incorporation into your design. Provides examples of real-world application of these principles. In sum, another great publication from Ed Allen and Pat Rand.
I’m about half-way through this book and have already found it immensely helpful. The explanations of the detail patterns it outlines are very well written, easy to understand, and appropriately illustrated.
Many aspects of building design are covered. This should be required reading for all architecture students. One person found this helpful. When considering aestehtics merit, we are all too often seduced by elaborate expressions of form and material. Unfortunately, the resulting oversight keeps many of us from discovering a building’s more subtle — yet no less interesting and important — detailjng achievements, often times revealed only through the closer study and examination of a aesthetids details, both individually and as part of a greater whole.
Understanding these systems, which the book often presents in their archiyectural principal form, allows architects — both practicing and aspiring — along with other building professionals and lay persons alike, to readily grasp the fundamentals of well-designed building details.
